Katie stared at Detective Parsons, unsure if she could walk out of an interview like this.
It was her first time ever in a police precinct. The building was lit with florescent lights, which seemed brighter than the grey daylight outside, and washed out the warmth from any colour that happened to be there. In a movie, it would make sense. If she were filming this, she would totally up the florescent lighting, heighten the contrast, and add more grey and brown to the scene. Really drive the emotional tone.
In real life, it was just depressing and harsh.
Kinda fitting. She’d swung from nervousness to distinct wariness as the detective had asked her question after question—all questions she’d answered before. This was proving to be a waste of time. And she didn’t know what he was trying to get at with this last question.
“Could you repeat that?” she asked.
Detective Parsons faced her over a cluttered desk in the middle of a busy open-plan office, wan-faced with tired eyes and a slight expression of annoyance that hadn’t budged since Katie arrived. She suspected it was permanent. He was tapping away at a computer and didn’t seem to register how tense she sounded.
“How well do you know Ms. Fayed-Smith?” he said again.
“I thought I was here about the attack on Mo.” Katie realized she didn’t know Mo’s last name, which felt wrong considering how warmly the band had welcomed her last night.
“You are. We believe it’s connected to the attack on Ms. Lacroix last week. The CCTV from the bar showed a male matching the description given by Ms. Ashby.”
The totally generic description, but if the police thought it was the same guy, then okay.
“Nave Lacroix was intoxicated on more than just alcohol on Thursday. Some of it was probably willingly taken, some possibly was not. Ms. Fayed-Smith happens to be in our records from a previous drug-related incident.” He fixed her with a stony stare. “Does Ms. Fayed-Smith use drugs?”
“Hell no. She hates them.” Katie was absolutely certain of that.
“Has she ever suggested using them?”
“No.”
“Has she ever sold you any?”
Katie glared. “No. Like I said, she hates them. She doesn’t want anything to do with them. There’s no way she’s involved in any of this.”
Parsons sat back in his chair, his voice bored. “Just covering my bases. I understand you’re dating her, but I would appreciate it if you considered this question seriously. Would you say she’s difficult to handle? Holds grudges, takes things personally, volatile temper, unhealthy habits, prone to violence, and so on.”
Katie immediately shook her head. “Nope.”
He eyed her, then turned and typed more stuff into his computer. “How about any former associates of hers who might be involved with drugs? Were they there that night?”
Parry immediately flashed to mind, but she definitely hadn’t been there that night. “She doesn’t have any associates like that. So no.”
“Anyone stand out in your memory as being drugged or high?”
Oh God. Not especially? It wasn’t like Katie could say, Oh yeah the entire freaking band was, dontcha know.
